AAC block walls as infill in an RCC frame

Are AAC Blocks Load-Bearing? What You Can and Can't Do

Clyft Editorial Team3 min read

"Can AAC carry the roof?" is the first question many owners ask when a contractor suggests switching from brick. The answer explains how a modern Hyderabad house actually stands up.

How Does an RCC-Framed House Carry Load?

In a framed house, load travels from slab to beams, beams to columns, and columns to footings. The walls sit inside that frame and carry only their own weight. That is why the frame is designed first, and walls can be changed from brick to AAC without redesigning the slab — though lighter walls let the engineer size the frame more efficiently.

Can AAC Be Load-Bearing?

AAC can be used in load-bearing masonry for low-rise buildings to a specific design, as is common in some countries. In Indian residential construction this is rare: houses are built as RCC frames, and AAC is chosen precisely because, as infill, its light weight reduces the load on the frame.

Infill (usual)Load-bearing (rare)
Carries slab loadNoYes, by design
Needs RCC frameYesNo, but needs specific design
Common in Hyderabad housesYesNo

How Strong Are AAC Blocks?

MaterialTypical compressive strength
AAC blockabout 3 – 4.5 N/mm²
Fly ash brick (common grades)about 7.5 – 10 N/mm²
Burnt clay brick (good quality)about 3.5 – 10+ N/mm²

AAC's strength is plenty for an infill wall supporting itself, and its low density is the point: the wall weighs a third of a brick wall.

What Loads Can an AAC Wall Take?

  • Its own weight, over the full storey height between floor and beam, within the limits the design sets for height and length.
  • Everyday fixings — curtain rods, shelves, frames — with anchors made for aerated concrete.
  • Heavy fixings — geysers, loaded kitchen cabinets, large TV mounts — preferably into a concrete member, or with heavy-duty AAC anchors at the manufacturer's rated loads.
  • Door and window frames, fixed to the blocks with suitable anchors, with lintels over all openings.

Lintels and Openings

Every opening in an AAC wall needs a lintel — cast-in-place RCC or a precast lintel — bearing adequately on the blocks at each side. Large openings and openings near columns should follow the structural drawing.

The Short Version

AAC is infill in a Hyderabad house: the frame carries the load, and AAC makes that frame's job lighter. Do not plan for AAC walls to carry a slab without a specific structural design, use proper anchors for fixings, and put lintels over every opening.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are AAC blocks load-bearing?

AAC can carry load in specially designed low-rise masonry, but in Indian houses it is almost always used as non-load-bearing infill in an RCC frame. The columns, beams and slabs carry the building; the blocks fill the frame.

Can an AAC wall support a roof slab?

Not in a typical Indian house design. A slab should bear on beams and columns. Using AAC walls to carry a slab requires a specific structural design, which is uncommon.

What is the compressive strength of AAC blocks?

Typically around 3 to 4.5 N/mm², depending on density and grade. That is ample for infill walls carrying their own weight, but lower than burnt clay or fly ash bricks used in load-bearing masonry.

Can I hang heavy things on an AAC wall?

Yes, with the right fixings. Use anchors designed for AAC or aerated concrete, or fix heavy items such as geysers, kitchen cabinets and TV mounts into concrete members where possible.

Can I make a door opening in an existing AAC wall?

In an infill wall the frame carries the load, but any new opening needs a lintel above it and should be checked by an engineer, especially if the wall sits under a beam carrying something unusual.
