Steel is usually the single largest material cost in an RCC house after cement, and the brand choice is where most buyers either overspend or cut a corner they should not. This guide explains what actually separates TMT brands, which are available in Hyderabad, and how to choose without paying for a logo or risking the frame of your house.
What Actually Differs Between TMT Brands?
Every TMT bar sold as Fe 500 must meet IS 1786: a minimum yield strength of 500 MPa, minimum elongation, and limits on carbon, sulphur and phosphorus. So, like cement, two certified bars of the same grade are equivalent on paper. What differs is how far above the minimums a mill consistently operates, and that depends on how the steel is made.
| Primary producers | Secondary producers | |
|---|---|---|
| Raw material | Iron ore, in an integrated blast furnace plant | Scrap and sponge iron, in induction or electric furnaces |
| Chemistry control | Very tight; impurities refined out | Depends on the mill's refining and testing |
| Consistency | High, batch to batch | Good in established mills, variable in small ones |
| Price | Higher | Lower, often by several rupees a kg |
| Examples in Hyderabad | Vizag Steel (RINL), JSW, SAIL, Jindal | Jairaj, Radha, Shree, Dwaraka and other regional brands |
The secondary sector is not second-rate by definition: large secondary mills with proper refining and quench-and-temper lines produce bars well inside IS 1786. The risk is at the small, uncertified end of the market, where a bar marked Fe 500 may not be.

Fe 500 or Fe 500D for a House in Hyderabad?
Fe 500D has the same 500 MPa yield strength as Fe 500 but tighter chemistry limits and higher minimum elongation, so it bends further before it breaks. That matters most in earthquakes. Hyderabad lies in seismic Zone II, the lowest hazard zone in India, so Fe 500 meets the requirement for most houses. Many engineers still specify Fe 500D because the price difference is small and the extra ductility is a cheap safety margin. The grade is the engineer's decision; the drawing will say which.
How Do You Choose Between Brands for Your House?
A practical way to decide:
- Start from the drawing. Note the grade and the diameters it calls for. Steel for a house is usually 8, 10, 12 and 16 mm; check that the brand you are considering stocks all of them, so you are not mixing brands within a member.
- Set a floor on quality. Accept only BIS-certified bars with the brand and grade rolled into the bar, and ask for the mill test certificate.
- Compare at your real quantity. Steel is priced per kg, and a house of 1,500 to 2,000 sq ft typically needs several tonnes. A difference of ₹3 a kg across 6 tonnes is ₹18,000.
- Decide what the premium buys you. Primary steel buys tighter consistency and easier verification. If you or your engineer can inspect deliveries and certificates, an established regional brand is a reasonable saving. If you cannot, the primary brands reduce the risk.
Our price pages show each brand at every bar size, per kg, per 12 metre rod and per tonne, so you can compare the sizes you need rather than a headline figure.
What Should You Check When Steel Is Delivered?
- Markings rolled into the bar: brand and grade, repeated along the length.
- Tag on the bundle with BIS licence number, grade, diameter and heat number.
- Mill test certificate for the heat number on the tag.
- Weight check. Weigh a few rods; a 12 mm rod of 12 metres should be about 10.7 kg. Bars much lighter than the standard weight are thinner than they should be.
- Light surface rust is acceptable; flaking, pitted rust is not.
The Short Version
In Hyderabad you are choosing between excellent primary steel and good regional steel that is several rupees a kilo cheaper. Fix the grade and sizes from the drawing, insist on certification and weight checks, buy each member's steel from one brand, and compare prices at the sizes and tonnage you actually need.
