Paint shows every flaw in the plaster beneath it. Checking before the painters arrive is far cheaper than repainting.
The Seven Checks
| Check | How | What's acceptable |
|---|---|---|
| Flatness | 2 m straight edge in several directions | Small, even gaps only |
| Bond | Tap with a coin or knuckle | Solid sound throughout |
| Cracks | Look with side light | Only fine, stable shrinkage cracks |
| Corners and edges | Straight edge and square | Straight, sharp, square |
| Openings | Around doors and windows | Even margins, plumb reveals |
| Finish | Run a hand over it | Even texture, no loose sand |
| Curing | Ask, and look for dusting | Cured at least 7 days |
Fixing What You Find
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Hollow patches | Cut out, clean, dampen, replaster |
| Junction cracks | Open up, fix mesh, replaster |
| Fine shrinkage cracks | Fill before putty |
| Waviness | Level coat or putty, if minor |
| Dusty surface | Indicates poor curing; consult before painting |
The Short Version
Straight edge, tap test, side light, square corners — then fix hollows and junction cracks before any paint goes on.
