Cement and steel are the two largest material costs in a house, and in Hyderabad neither has a published price. Two suppliers can quote the same bag differently on the same afternoon. That gap is your saving, if you ask the right way.
Why Do Quotes for the Same Thing Differ?
Each supplier's price reflects their own stock, what they paid for it, how much they want the order, and their delivery costs to your site. Prices also move weekly with fuel, freight and demand. So a "market price" for cement or steel is really a range, and the supplier's quote can land anywhere in it. Competition pulls the quotes towards the bottom.
What Should You Ask For?
Most quote comparisons fail because the quotes are not for the same thing. Send every supplier the same requirement:
| Item | Example |
|---|---|
| Material and brand | UltraTech PPC cement; or Vizag Fe 500D TMT |
| Grade and size | PPC; or 8, 10, 12 and 16 mm |
| Quantity and unit | 150 bags; or 2.5 tonnes split by size |
| Site location | Exact area and road, with access notes |
| Delivery date | The day you need it, with a time window |
| Alternatives allowed | e.g. "or Ramco PPC" — widens the competition |
And ask every supplier to state:
- Price per unit, and whether GST is included.
- Loading, unloading and delivery charges to your site.
- Validity of the quote.
- Payment terms.
When Is the Best Time to Order?
- Order the whole stage at once. Cement and steel are priced in quantity slabs; 150 bags for a slab pour is priced much better than 15 bags at a time.
- Order a few days before you need it, not the morning of. Urgency weakens your position, and a supplier who knows you need cement today has no reason to sharpen the price.
- Watch the monsoon. Demand and logistics change from June to September; ordering ahead of a long wet spell avoids both shortages and wet stock.
How Do You Compare Quotes Fairly?
Convert every quote to a delivered price per unit including GST:
Delivered price per unit = (unit price × quantity + GST if extra + loading/unloading + delivery) ÷ quantity
A quote of ₹270 a bag plus ₹6 unloading plus ₹1,500 delivery for 150 bags is ₹286 a bag delivered. A quote of ₹282 a bag delivered free is cheaper. Do this arithmetic every time.
For steel, compare per kg at the sizes you need. Some suppliers price small diameters slightly higher; a quote that is cheap at 16 mm but dear at 8 mm may cost you more overall.
How Do You Spot a Quote That Will Change?
- No validity date. The price can be "revised" when you call to confirm.
- No delivery terms. Unloading and delivery appear on the invoice.
- "Equivalent brand" without naming it. You may get something cheaper than you compared.
- Unusually low price with full advance payment. The most common pattern behind non-delivery.
Is There a Faster Way?
Calling five suppliers, writing down five answers and converting them to a delivered price takes most of a morning, every stage. A quote marketplace does it for you. On Clyft, you post the brand, grade, quantity, site and date once; verified suppliers across Hyderabad quote against it, usually within ten minutes between 10:30 AM and 7 PM; and you see the lowest delivered price. You confirm with a small booking fee and pay the supplier the balance on delivery, after you have checked the material.
The Short Version
Send every supplier the same requirement, ask for the delivered price with GST and a validity date, order a full stage a few days ahead, and compare on a delivered-per-unit basis. Competition, not negotiation, is what gets you the lowest price.
