Plinth Filling and Damp Proof Course (DPC): How to Do It

Clyft Editorial Team3 min read

The plinth is where the house leaves the ground. Two things done here decide whether your ground floor stays flat and your walls stay dry: how well the filling is compacted, and whether the DPC is continuous.

The Plinth Sequence

  1. Plinth beam cast over the footings, tying columns together at plinth level.
  2. Plinth masonry (where used) up to plinth height.
  3. Filling inside the plinth, in compacted layers.
  4. Anti-termite treatment on the top of the filling.
  5. PCC floor base over the filling.
  6. DPC at plinth level under the walls.

Plinth Filling Done Right

StepPractice
MaterialGood murrum or clean soil free of organic matter; sand where specified
Layers150 – 200 mm each
CompactionWater each layer and ram or use a plate compactor
TestingProbe for soft spots; recompact any that yield
Top surfaceLevelled to receive anti-termite treatment and the PCC base

Uncompacted filling settles over months, leaving a gap under the floor that shows as cracked tiles and hollow-sounding floors. Black cotton soil should never be used as filling.

The Damp Proof Course

Moisture in the ground rises through porous masonry by capillary action, causing damp patches, flaking paint and salt deposits on lower walls. A DPC breaks that path.

ItemTypical practice
PositionAt plinth level, under the walls, across their full width
MaterialDense cement concrete with waterproofing admixture, or bitumen layers
ThicknessAbout 40 – 50 mm for concrete DPC
ContinuityUnbroken around the building, lapped at corners
CuringAt least 7 days before masonry above

Plinth Protection

After construction, a sloped concrete apron around the outside of the plinth carries rainwater away from the foundation. On expansive soils this is especially important, because water soaking in next to the foundation causes swelling.

Checks Before the Ground Floor

  • Filling compacted, levelled and free of soft spots.
  • Anti-termite treatment certificate for the stage.
  • DPC continuous, at the correct level, and cured.
  • Plinth beam level and true.
  • Services that must pass under the floor — drain pipes, conduits — laid before the base is cast.

The Short Version

Compact the plinth filling in thin layers, treat it against termites, and lay a continuous DPC before the walls. They are cheap at this stage and very expensive to fix once the floor and walls are finished.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is plinth filling?

The soil, murrum or sand filled inside the plinth walls or beams up to floor level, compacted in layers to form a firm base for the ground floor. Poorly compacted filling settles and cracks the floor.

What is a damp proof course?

A layer at plinth level that stops ground moisture rising into the walls by capillary action. It is commonly a dense cement concrete layer with a waterproofing admixture, or a bituminous layer.

What is the thickness of DPC?

Commonly around 40 to 50 mm of cement concrete with a waterproofing compound, laid over the full width of the wall at plinth level.

Is a plinth beam the same as DPC?

No. A plinth beam is a reinforced concrete beam at plinth level that ties the columns together and supports walls. The DPC is a moisture barrier, which may sit on top of the plinth beam.

How should plinth filling be compacted?

In layers of about 150 to 200 mm, each watered and rammed or compacted with a plate compactor, before the next layer is placed.
