Terrace waterproofing on a house roof

Terrace Waterproofing: Methods, Slopes and Hyderabad Heat

Clyft Editorial Team3 min read

The roof slab is the most exposed concrete in the house: sun all summer, rain all monsoon. Most terrace leaks are not the slab failing — they are water finding a gap at a corner, an outlet or a parapet joint.

Get the Slope and Drainage Right First

ItemPractice
SlopeAround 1 in 100 towards outlets, built with screed or brickbat coba
OutletsEnough of them, sized for heavy rain, with grating
No flat spotsPonding water finds every defect
Rainwater pipesSized and fixed securely; consider rainwater harvesting

Common Waterproofing Methods

MethodHow it worksNotes
Brickbat cobaBrick pieces in waterproofed mortar form the slope; cement finishTraditional, adds insulation and weight
Bituminous / APP membraneFactory-made sheets torched or bonded onDurable; needs protection from UV and traffic
Liquid polyurethane or acrylic coatingApplied as a seamless coatGood at details; follow coating thickness
Cementitious polymer coatingBrush-applied cement-based layersCommon, economical; needs a sound base
Heat-reflective top coatWhite coating over the systemReduces heat gain in Hyderabad's summer

Details That Decide Success

  • Parapet junction: form a fillet (cove) where the slab meets the parapet, and carry the waterproofing up at least 300 mm.
  • Outlets: make the waterproofing continuous into the outlet with a proper flange.
  • Pipe and conduit penetrations: seal with collars.
  • Expansion joints, if any, sealed with flexible material.
  • Water tank supports: waterproof under and around them.

The Pond Test

  1. Block all outlets.
  2. Flood the terrace with 25–50 mm of water.
  3. Leave for 48–72 hours.
  4. Inspect the ceiling below for any damp.
  5. Repair and retest before the protective or finish layer.

Timing

Waterproof the terrace before the monsoon if possible, on a dry, cured slab. Avoid applying coatings in rain or on a damp surface, or in the hottest part of a summer day.

The Short Version

Slope to outlets, a continuous waterproofing layer carried up the parapets, sealed details at every penetration, and a pond test before finishes. Add a reflective coat for Hyderabad's sun.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best terrace waterproofing method?

It depends on the roof, budget and use. Common options are brickbat coba with a cement finish, bituminous or APP membranes, and liquid-applied polyurethane or acrylic coatings. Correct slope, drainage and detailing at parapets matter as much as the material.

What slope should a terrace have?

Enough to drain water to outlets without ponding, commonly around 1 in 100, built up with a screed or brickbat coba layer.

What is brickbat coba?

A traditional method where broken brick pieces are laid in a lime or cement mortar with a waterproofing compound to form the slope, then finished with a smooth cement layer. It adds insulation but also weight.

How do I test terrace waterproofing?

With a pond test: block the outlets, flood the terrace with a few centimetres of water for 48 to 72 hours, and check the ceiling below for damp.

Does a heat-reflective coating help in Hyderabad?

Yes. White, heat-reflective roof coatings reduce the heat absorbed by the slab in summer and can lower indoor temperatures on the top floor noticeably.
