Many Hyderabad houses, especially in newer suburbs, rely on a borewell alongside the municipal supply. It is usually the first thing drilled on a plot — and its position has to suit a house that has not been built yet.
Permission
Telangana's Water, Land and Trees Act, 2002 (WALTA) regulates groundwater use and requires permission before a new borewell is drilled. The authority, documents and fees are set locally; ask your Mandal revenue office or the groundwater department before you hire a rig. Unauthorised drilling can attract penalties.
Where to Place It
| Consideration | Practice |
|---|---|
| Footings | Keep clear of planned footings and the sump excavation |
| Septic tank | As far away as the plot allows, ideally on the opposite side |
| Rig access | A drilling rig needs space and a firm approach |
| Future house | Must not fall inside a room or under a column |
| Vastu | Many families prefer the north-east |
Before or During Construction?
Drilling first gives water for curing and mixing — a big saving over tankers through a long build. Do it only after the house plan is final enough to fix the borewell's position.
Recharge and Water Quality
- Recharge pit: a pit with filter layers near the borewell channels roof rainwater back into the ground.
- Rainwater harvesting: encouraged and, in many cases, required for new buildings.
- Testing: check for hardness, fluoride and contamination before drinking; treat as needed.
The Short Version
Get WALTA permission, place the borewell away from footings and the septic tank, drill early if the plan allows, recharge it with rainwater, and test the water.
