Every bag, bar and block that is wasted was paid for. On a house budget of ₹50 lakh with materials around 60 percent, 5 percent wastage is about ₹1.5 lakh — the cost of a compound wall.
Where Each Material Is Lost
| Material | Common causes | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Cement | Damp storage, torn bags, mortar setting before use | Dry raised storage, stage buying, mix small batches |
| Steel | Unplanned cutting, rust, bending errors | Bar bending schedule, cut planning, covered storage |
| Sand | Washed or blown away, dumped on soil | Hard base, cover, measuring boxes |
| Aggregate | Mixed into soil, overspill | Hard base, defined stockpile |
| AAC blocks / bricks | Breakage in unloading and handling | Unload by hand or pallet, stack properly |
| Water | Leaks, uncontrolled use | Taps, curing plan |
Practical Controls
- Order by stage, so little sits on site.
- Store properly — cement raised and covered, steel off the ground, sand and aggregate on a hard base.
- Measure every mix with boxes; never shovel-count.
- Mix only what can be used within about 30 minutes.
- Plan steel cuts from the bar bending schedule to use full 12 m bars.
- Keep a materials register of received, used and balance.
- Secure the site and stores after hours.
The Short Version
Wastage is a management problem, not a materials problem. Buy by stage, store well, measure every mix, plan cuts and keep a register — and 5–10 percent of your material budget stays in your pocket.
