Water for Construction: Quality, Quantity and Tankers

Subhang Reddy2 min read

Water is the cheapest ingredient in concrete and the easiest to get wrong — too much of it in the mix, too little of it during curing, or the wrong kind entirely.

Quality

WaterFor concrete?
Municipal or drinking waterYes
Clean borewell waterUsually yes; test if salty or hard
Water with visible oil, sewage or industrial wasteNo
Seawater, brackish waterNot for RCC

IS 456 sets limits on acidity, organic and inorganic solids, sulphates and chlorides, and allows doubtful water to be tested by comparing setting time and strength against distilled water.

Quantity

UseApproximate water
Mixing M20 concrete180 – 200 L per m³
Mixing 1:6 mortarProportionate to cement, workable consistency
Pond fill on a slab (25–50 mm)25 – 50 L per m²
Daily curing top-upsMuch higher in March – June
Wetting blocks, walls, plasterOngoing

A 1,000 sq ft (≈93 m²) slab pond 50 mm deep holds about 4,600 litres before evaporation — nearly a 5,000-litre tanker just to fill once.

Planning Supply

  • Borewell drilled early, if the plan and permissions allow.
  • Tankers booked around pour days and curing periods.
  • Storage — a tank or the future sump, cleaned, to hold a day or two of water.
  • Summer — budget for more top-ups.

The Short Version

Clean water for the mix, measured carefully; lots of water for curing, planned in advance. Test anything doubtful before it touches your steel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What water can be used for concrete?

Clean water free from harmful amounts of oils, acids, alkalis, salts, sugar and organic matter. Water fit for drinking is generally suitable; IS 456 sets limits and tests for doubtful sources.

How much water does concrete need for mixing?

About 180 to 200 litres per cubic metre of M20 concrete, at a water-cement ratio of 0.45 to 0.50.

How much water does curing need?

Ponding a slab 25 to 50 mm deep needs roughly 25 to 50 litres per square metre to fill, plus daily top-ups that are much larger in Hyderabad's summer.

Can borewell water be used for construction?

Usually, if it is clean and not saline. Test doubtful water, since high chlorides or sulphates can attack concrete and corrode steel.

Can seawater or wastewater be used?

No, not for reinforced concrete. Salts and contaminants corrode steel and weaken concrete.
