With river sand restricted in many places, most Hyderabad sites now use manufactured sand — in two grades for two jobs.
The Two Grades
| M-sand | P-sand | |
|---|---|---|
| Use | Concrete, masonry mortar | Plastering |
| Particle size | Up to 4.75 mm | Finer, typically up to ~2.36 mm |
| Finish | — | Smooth |
| Water demand | Normal for concrete | Slightly higher (finer) |
Using the Right One
| Job | Sand |
|---|---|
| Footings, columns, slabs | M-sand (concrete grade) |
| Block and brick masonry | M-sand |
| Internal and external plaster | P-sand |
| Floor bed | M-sand |
Quality Checks
- Dust and silt: rub damp sand in your palm; heavy staining means too many fines.
- Shape: cubical particles pack better than flaky ones.
- Grading: consistent, without lumps of only fine or only coarse material.
- Moisture: wet sand changes the water you add to the mix.
The Short Version
M-sand for concrete and masonry, P-sand for plaster — both clean, well-graded and checked for dust.
