The main door is the first Vastu decision most families make, and one of the first things fixed in the architectural plan, because it sets the entrance, steps, sit-out and often the living room layout.
Door Position by Facing Direction
Vastu practitioners divide each wall into portions (padas) and favour some over others. Simplified, the commonly followed guidance is:
| House facing | Preferred door position | Commonly avoided |
|---|---|---|
| East | North-east portion of the east wall | South-east portion |
| North | North-east portion of the north wall | North-west corner end |
| West | North-west portion of the west wall | South-west portion |
| South | South-east portion of the south wall | South-west portion |
Practitioners differ on exact divisions; families often confirm the position with a Vastu expert for their plot.
Other Common Main Door Guidelines
| Guideline | In construction |
|---|---|
| Largest and strongest door in the house | Door size and frame on the joinery schedule |
| Opens inwards, clockwise | Swing direction on the plan |
| A raised threshold | Step and frame detail |
| Two shutters often preferred | Wider opening and lintel |
| Well lit, unobstructed approach | No column, tree or pole directly in front |
| Not directly aligned with the back door | Plan layout |
Fitting It With the Rules and Structure
- Setbacks: the entrance steps and sit-out must respect the front setback. See building setbacks in Hyderabad.
- Structure: a wide door near a column needs a proper lintel or beam above; the engineer sizes it.
- Staircase and parking: on small plots, an external stair or car parking can compete with the preferred door position — resolve it in design.
Planning Checklist
- Confirm the facing direction of the plot with a compass.
- Decide the main door portion before the plan is drawn.
- Check it against setbacks and parking.
- Size the opening and lintel in the drawings.
- Specify door size, material and swing in the joinery schedule.
The Short Version
North-east of an east or north wall, north-west of a west wall, south-east of a south wall, largest door opening inwards with a threshold — decided in the drawings, checked against setbacks, and built with a properly sized lintel.
