Many families building in Hyderabad plan their house with Vastu in mind. Whatever your view of it, the practical point is the same: Vastu decisions — where the kitchen, stairs, sump and main door go — are fixed by the drawings and the structure, so they must be made before construction starts.
The Directions and What Goes Where
The guidelines below are the ones most commonly followed. Practitioners differ in details, and many families consult a Vastu expert for their plot.
| Zone | Element (traditional) | Commonly placed here |
|---|---|---|
| North-east (Ishanya) | Water | Pooja room, sump, borewell, open space, windows |
| East | Sun | Main entrance, living room, windows |
| South-east (Agneya) | Fire | Kitchen, electrical panel |
| South | — | Bedrooms, staircase |
| South-west (Nairutya) | Earth | Master bedroom, overhead tank, heaviest structure |
| West | — | Children's bedroom, dining, staircase |
| North-west (Vayavya) | Air | Guest room, storage, septic tank (commonly) |
| North | — | Living room, entrance, open areas |
| Centre (Brahmasthan) | Space | Kept open and unobstructed |
Levels and Slopes
| Guideline | How it shows up in construction |
|---|---|
| Plot higher in the south-west, lower in the north-east | Site levelling and plinth levels |
| Floors slope gently towards the north-east | Floor screed and drainage |
| Terrace drains towards the north or east | Terrace slope and outlet positions |
| Heavier structure in the south-west | Overhead tank and stair often placed there |
Where Vastu Meets Engineering
| Vastu preference | Construction implication |
|---|---|
| Sump in the north-east | Excavation and waterproofing there; check it does not undermine footings |
| Overhead tank in the south-west | The structure under it must be designed for its load |
| Staircase in the south, west or south-west | Fixes column and beam layout around the stair |
| Septic tank away from the north-east | Coordinate with the sewer line and setbacks |
| Centre kept open | Avoid a column in the middle of the house if the span allows |
These are all decided in the architectural and structural drawings. Give your architect your Vastu requirements at the start.
Where Vastu Meets the Rules
Setbacks and building rules are legal requirements. If a Vastu-preferred position for a room, staircase or tank falls in a setback, the rule wins. Compromises — rotating a room, shifting a stair, using an alternative direction many practitioners accept — are made in design, not on site.
Specific Guides
The Short Version
Decide Vastu positions for the main door, kitchen, stair, sump, tank and septic tank before the drawings, give them to your architect and engineer, and resolve conflicts with setbacks and structure in design. Built work is very expensive to move.
