How to estimate quantities
Never buy by guesswork. Work from the drawings:
- Cement, sand and aggregate: from concrete volume and the mix ratio (see the concrete mix ratio guide).
- Steel: from the bar bending schedule, converted to weight (see the steel quantity guide).
- Bricks or blocks: from wall area and thickness (see the brick calculation guide).
Thumb rules are fine for an early budget; the structural and architectural drawings give the real numbers.
Buy in stages
Materials are needed stage by stage, so purchasing is phased with the schedule:
- Foundation and RCC frame: cement, steel, sand, aggregate.
- Walls: bricks or AAC blocks, cement, sand.
- Plaster and finishing base: cement, sand.
- Services and finishing: wires and cables, plumbing, plywood, tiles, paint, fittings.
